Where Are The Best Lighthouses On The Alabama Gulf Shores?

There are several excellent locations with lighthouses that offer great photo opportunities and allow you to walk inside. These are some of the best near our vacation rentals in Alabama.

Sand Island Lighthouse

The Sand Island Lighthouse is a notable landmark located off the Alabama coast. It is located in Mobile Bay, and this brick lighthouse stands on one of the smallest pieces of land surrounded by the sea.

The story is that over the decades, the land eroded and slowly slipped into the Gulf. In 2012, a dredging project pumped 1.4 million cubic yards of sand to rebuild the island, ultimately saving the lighthouse, or so it appeared. Hurricane Isaac hit months later, washing away the $6,000,000 worth of restoration. This is just a small portion of the Sand Island Lighthouse’s wild history. If you want to get up close, it is only accessible via boat.

Middle Bay Lighthouse

Further into Mobile Bay, you will come across Middle Bay Lighthouse. You can probably guess where the lighthouse is based on its name, but it is a hexagonal-shaped cottage-style lighthouse. It was operational from 1885 to 1967. The lighthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

Years later, in 2003, a real-time weather station was added, which is still in use today. See live data from the Middle Bay Lighthouse thanks to Alabama's Real-Time Coastal Observing System.

The lighthouse has seen several restoration efforts. However, this lighthouse isn’t available for tours.
