Why Fall & Winter Are the Best Seasons on the Alabama Coast (Snowbird Perks & Local Secrets)

Why Fall & Winter Are the Best Seasons on the Alabama Coast (Snowbird Perks & Local Secrets)

We’ve been saying it around here lately:

“Summer ended. Beach season didn’t.”

Now that we’re transitioning off our peak summer rush, us locals truly come alive—and if you know anything about the Alabama Gulf Coast, that should tell you something! If your idea of a perfect getaway involves a slower pace, crowd-free beaches, and spontaneous schedules, this is hands-down the best time of year to visit Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and Fort Morgan.

(Plus, our significantly lower off-season rental rates should be reason enough to start packing!)

The Local Favorites: Fall Events You Can’t Miss

Fall on the coast is packed with local tradition and unforgettable energy. If you're visiting between September and November, put these two iconic events right at the top of your itinerary:

1. The Annual National Shrimp Festival (Gulf Shores, AL)

This event holds a special place in my heart—it’s where my parents actually met! Held every October right where Highway 59 meets the beach, this beloved festival brings the entire community together. Between listening to incredible local bands, browsing regional art vendors, and eating your body weight in Cajun Pistols and fresh Gulf seafood, it’s an event you simply can’t miss. (We know we won’t!)
(Pictured are my parents- years after they met and married)

2. Bulls on the Beach at the Flora-Bama

You haven’t seen a rodeo until you’ve seen professional bull riding directly on the sand. Held every September at the legendary Flora-Bama, Bulls on the Beach pairs live bull riding with signature Bushwackers and gulf views. It’s rowdy, unique, and purely coastal—proof that it doesn’t take much to keep us entertained on the coast!

Welcome, Snowbirds!

Extended Stay Perks & Winter Events

As fall turns to winter, our coastal community proudly welcomes our seasonal residents—our Snowbirds! If you’re planning an extended stay to escape the cold, here is what makes winter on our beaches so rewarding:

• Snowbird Clubs & Community Gatherings: Stay as social or as relaxed as you like. The area hosts state-specific Snowbird Clubs, weekly potlucks, golf outings, and coastal volunteer programs.

• The Winter Showcase Series: Local experts host free educational presentations throughout January and February, covering regional history, coastal ecology, art, and nature.

• Winter Culinary Festivals: The fun doesn't end after the holidays! Early spring brings fan favorites like the Orange Beach Seafood Festival, Fort Morgan Oyster Fest, and the Ballyhoo Festival.

• Active Outdoor Living: With mild temperatures averaging in the mid-60s, winter is ideal for golfing, pickleball, kayaking, and hiking the 28+ miles of paved trails at Gulf State Park.
