When you’re planning a trip to the Gulf Shores area, it’s probably already a given that you’ll be spending plenty of time in the water. You might want to relax on the sand, participate in thrilling water sports like jet skiing or parasailing, or watch the waves roll in. The beaches in Gulf Shores can get a bit crowded at times, particularly in the peak of summer.
There are plenty of family-friendly activities to enjoy during a Gulf Shores trip; however, if you’re looking for something more secluded and just as beautiful, consider visiting Little Lagoon in Gulf Shores. This breathtaking destination is just moments away from our Fort Morgan rentals and is sure to impress.
About Little Lagoon
Little Lagoon is precisely what its name suggests: a small body of water located near the coastlines of the Gulf of Mexico. The lagoon spans 10 miles and is half a mile wide, situated on the Gulf’s northern side. There is a tiny stretch of beach separating Little Lagoon from most of the Gulf of Mexico. You’ll find so much more than just an incredible view when you come here. You can also enjoy world-class fishing opportunities, beautiful parks that put you up close with nature, and a relaxing atmosphere that lets you indeed leave your worries behind. You can come for an hour or two or spend the entire day exploring everything the Lagoon offers.
Lagoon Pier and Beach Access
When you visit Little Lagoon, you can’t miss a trip to the pier. This pier is situated in a sandy area of water, which means it’s not the best place to come if you want to fish. However, the pier is an excellent spot for birdwatchers or those who wish to view the water. To access the pier, you’ll need to head to the cul-de-sac behind Sanibel Condominium, located on the extension of West Lagoon Avenue. You can find public parking on West 13th Street if you’ve driven to the area.
Once you’ve parked your car here, you’ll be right near the public beach access point. Head across the street and find West Beach Boulevard, where you can easily access the sand. When you arrive at the beach, you’ll find the same stunning white sand and crystal-clear waters that you would expect from more extensive beaches in Gulf Shores. However, you’ll also likely notice that the crowds are minimal, leaving plenty of room on the shoreline for your family. You can enjoy access to benches and a shower right at the beach, but walk a few blocks West to Lagoon Pass Park if you need to use the restroom.
Parks
Speaking of parks, there are two gorgeous parks that you can take advantage of during your time at Little Lagoon. First, don’t miss a chance to visit Wade Ward Nature Park. Although this park is just a couple of blocks away from the downtown area, it presents a calm and relaxing oasis where you can slow down and enjoy the great outdoors. Visitors and locals can come here to access beautiful waterways and wetlands near Little Lagoon. You can get to Wade Ward Nature Park by the access point sidewalk on Highway 59. You’ll be able to see breathtaking wildlife such as alligators, pelicans, otters, and more, and there are great opportunities for fishing. If you’re a bird lover, you’ll be pleased to learn that this park is one of the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail sites!
Lagoon Park is another must-see attraction for those who enjoy nature. Just a couple of miles west of Highway 59 on Highway 180, this park offers a picturesque overview of the Lagoon and plenty of trails for walkers, joggers, and cyclists to enjoy. This park is relatively new and features convenient amenities like updated boat ramps, water access for kayaks and canoes, and a new bathhouse. Paddle your canoe along the water to spot some marine life or walk along the 5.3-mile trail to experience the land’s beauty.
Trails
It’s not hard to stay active here in Gulf Shores, thanks to the abundance of trails in the area. Little Lagoon is near two popular nature trails that walkers or hikers of all ages and skill levels can enjoy. First, you can visit Pine Beach Trail. This trail has been around since 1980 and is part of the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. You’ll begin in the gravel parking lot, allowing you to enter from either Mobile Street or Fort Morgan Road. Stop by the gazebo to use the facilities or get more information about the trail. It’s important to note that this trail is not paved, so watch your step! As you navigate the trail, you’ll come face to face with beautiful migratory birds and other wildlife, and you’ll also get to see plants such as Spanish moss, pine trees, and wildflowers. The trail will eventually bring you to Little Lagoon itself so that you can take advantage of the waters.
For something a bit different, you can explore the Jeff Friend Trail. Also part of the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, this trail is shorter than Pine Beach Trail, making it ideal for all ages and skill levels. Along the way, you’ll experience stunning nature and come across features like benches and informational signs. You can walk along the trail at your leisure or carry your kayak along the path until you reach the Lagoon! Just be aware that the trail does not have any restroom facilities, so plan ahead.
